This TV-movie biography of legendary black ballplayer Leroy "Satchel" Paige unfortunately whitewashes and hokes up his fascinating story. Larry Tye wrote Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend. Over a decade in the making, this film pays homage to a remarkable athlete. Gossett does a great job as Paige, and the rest of the cast is solid. And, concerning the Warner release: crisp, clear, good color, good sound. There’s a scene in the middle of the movie where Satchel Paige is driving his wife and Jackie Robinson to New York for a baseball game and they stop at a fruit stand. I found myself wanting more when the movie finished. Published in 2010, Satchel is a meticulously researched biography, weaving the life story of an itinerant African-American athlete with unflattering portraits of Jim Crow America on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line.
