Lygia Pape (7 April 1927 – 3 May 2004) was a prominent Brazilian visual artist, sculptor, engraver, and filmmaker, who was a key figure in the Concrete movement and a later co-founder of the Neo-Concrete Movement in Brazil during the 1950s and 1960s. Her most famous performance, Divisor (1968), a textile work that must be carried collectively, is reactivated in this exhibition. Lygia Pape worked in sculpture, engraving, and filmmaking. She ranged widely across mediums, challenging formal and conceptual boundaries. Pape was a founding member of the Neo-Concrete movement, which was dedicated to the inclusion of art into everyday life. Together with some 225 people, I was going to reenact Lygia Pape‘s 1968 performance “Divisor” (“Divider,” 1968).

As part of the exhibition, visitors are invited to take part in Divisor, a recreation of a performance first organized by Brazilian artist Lygia Pape (1927–2004) in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in 1967. A large open mouth confronted me as I entered the Serpentine Gallery. Also interested in engaging with viewers, her performance piece Divisor (1968) consists of a large white sheet with holes cut out for participants’ heads to fit through. Highly sexual, verging on the grotesque, the video – entitled Eat Me (1975) – provided a joyful entry into the world of Lygia Pape in this slimmed-down version of the 2011 retrospective at the Reina Sofía (curated by Manuel Borja-Villel and Teresa Velázquez).
