Her most famous performance, Divisor (1968), a textile work that must be carried collectively, is reactivated in this exhibition. As part of the exhibition, visitors are invited to take part in Divisor, a recreation of a performance first organized by Brazilian artist Lygia Pape (1927–2004) in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in 1967. A large open mouth confronted me as I entered the Serpentine Gallery. Also interested in engaging with viewers, her performance piece Divisor (1968) consists of a large white sheet with holes cut out for participants’ heads to fit through. Highly sexual, verging on the grotesque, the video – entitled Eat Me (1975) – provided a joyful entry into the world of Lygia Pape in this slimmed-down version of the 2011 retrospective at the Reina Sofía (curated by Manuel Borja-Villel and Teresa Velázquez).
